A new bill that would allow betting on college sports in New Jersey is being discussed by lawmakers. Bill ACR200 has already passed the Assembly Tourism, Gaming, and the Arts Committee by a vote of seven yeas to zero nays.
Current sports betting laws in New Jersey prohibit betting on college sports. ACR200 would modify the state’s constitution to allow NJ sportsbooks the opportunity to take bets on college sports nationwide.
At the moment, there are no dates set by either of the two chambers to discuss the bill.
An identical bill SCR133 makes the same proposal, but it last saw action in November, when the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee passed it by a vote of 11 yeas and no nays. Since then, it has been awaiting a hearing by the Assembly or the Senate.
In theory, either of the two bills could be approved and applied just in time for the football season since New Jersey’s legislature will hold hearings until the end of June.
